COMPOUND OBJECTS FROM THE SPY WHO LOVES YOU

Spies (Artists) Jonathan Ballak, Veronica De Jesus, Katie Grinnan, Xana Kudrjavcev DeMilner, Kelly Sears

Compound Objects — a. Objects which appear to have one meaning or purpose but have another, secretive meaning which may or may not preclude their apparent function. b. Machines built of everyday objects to perform extraordinary tasks. c. Mundane detritus which secretly performs an essential role in a clandestine plan.

The Artist/Spies were asked to form their own secret societies and function as agents on their behalf, and to consider how a James Bond gadget or Rube Goldberg machine might be harnessed and directed at something they truly valued. The project was based on an interest in delightful obfuscation—or a desire for a choreography of complication—in search of the creation of secretive things which might make the steps between the ordinary and the obvious inappropriately stimulating.
