An exhibition of drawing, sculpture and photographs of the artist’s experience following the 2008 Presidential race. All of the candidates have been invited to campaign at the gallery and view themselves as depicted. On February 2nd Democratic candidate Mike Gravel will be giving a campaign speech at the show. On February 5, Super Tuesday, we will watch the primary in the gallery. Check our website for announcements of other related events as they are scheduled. The following is excerpted from the artist’s campaign journal. Barack Obama’s event in New York was on the same night as John Edwards’. We took a cab from one to the next and walked into a scene that looked more like a corporate singles party. Everyone was in casual business attire and seemed to have a fraternal affiliation. The main act was Ben Harper who played guitar and sang. A Statue of Liberty was positioned at the front of the stage. The backdrop was an enormous American flag. Barack Obama came out and gave Mr. Harper a fratty hug and a macho two- handclasp shake. Mr. Obama continually pointed to the Statue of Liberty which was near him--so close, in fact, that he and the statue were the same size. His voice was very beautiful in the room. At one point during the speech, I turned around and saw several young couples making out. I wondered if they had met at the campaign event. Afterwards, I went to have a closer look at the Statue of Liberty and asked Obama’s staff where they had found it. “A prop shop,” they said. You could see the faux bronzing clearly and I understood why it seemed so out of scale -- the Statue was intended to stand in the distant background. |
