These four artists work with material in very fresh and different ways. Each of the artists has developed a personal iconography and style while bringing fresh ideas to classical sculptural forms like busts, fountains, and pedestals. Sky Burchard is based in Los Angeles. Burchard creates sculptures in a digital age. He takes his forms from the pixilated 3D world of the recent digital past. Characters and themes from Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Brothers become beautifully crafted sculptures that are nostalgic and futuristic at the same time. Burchard received his MFA from USC in 2003. He has shown internationally at Akiyoshidal in Japan and had a recent solo show at Dangerous Curve in LA. Adam Janes is based in Los Angeles. Janes has developed a uniquely American lexicon of beer power tools, toilets, food, and cartoon characters. He is an excellent craftsman who lets his skill as a woodworker interact with beer, fast food and the viewer. Janes’ work is included in the collections of MOCA and LACMA. He recently had a solo show at Galerie Vallois in Paris. Brett Lund is based in Los Angeles. A graduate of Art Center College of Design’s MFA program Lund’s work combines sci-fi, figurative sculpture, I Ching and spray foam. Lund takes classical sculptural forms and twists them as far as they will stretch. He has recently shown his work at Foxxy Productions, and Salon 94 in New York and has an up coming solo show at Daniel Hug Gallery in Los Angeles, and Galerie Christian Nagel in Berlin Danial Ruanova is based in Tijuana, Mexico. He works with plastic toy guns melting them and molding them together making forms of violence and playfulness. His sculptures resemble a playful dystopic future. His work was featured in “Strange New World” at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego and at the Santa Monica Museum of Art. Curious Green Jen DeNike & Ylva Ogland curated by Anat Ebgi Once upon a time there were two little blonde girls named Jen and Ylva who lived across the world from each other; Jen, from the grand land of Northeastern United States and Ylva, from the distant den of Swede; both born under auspicious fire sign of Aires. One day, in full maturation, these mirroring souls found each other during a European art feast held every other year under a bridge on the canals of Venice. Since their fortuitous meeting they have each inspired the other. Later realizing that they have both been captivated by Vilgot Sjöman’s 1968 diptych film “I am Curious: Yellow” and “I am Curious: Blue” (the melding of the two is Green), the mirror coincidences deepened. (Ingmar Bergman’s Persona is in the air as well). Independently, the two have concocted magical potions, which they pour on canvases and loom on video. For Curious Green, Jen and Ylva are pleased to share with you their version of happily ever after. Jen DeNike is based in New York. She received her Master of Fine Arts from Bard College in 2002 and has since exhibited her photographs and videos in the US and Europe in numerous galleries and museums such as the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, Tensta Konsthall in Sweden, PS1/MoMA in New York. She is currently represented by Smith-Stewart Gallery in New York City. Ylva Ogland lives and works in New York and Stockholm. She received her Master of Fine Arts from the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm, Sweden and has exhibited her paintings internationally, including Tokyo, Helsinki, New York, and Sweden. She is currently represented by Smith-Stewart Gallery in New York City, Brandstrom & Stene, Stockholm, Sweden and Shugoarts in Toyko, Japan. Curious Green video screening On the opening night of the exhibition, a Curious Green Outdoor Video Screening will be presented. Curated by Josh Kline, the screening will feature videos by Cory Arcangel, Meredith Danluck, Karthik Pandian, Carolee Schneemann, Abbey Williams, and Stina Wirfelt. This screening is a loose response to both Sjöman’s films and conversations with DeNike and Oglund. The video program has two segments and two focuses. One deals with works that are process-based or based on pre-determined actions, that also involve the perversion or twisting of a process towards a critical goal. The other half of the program will deal with artists looking at "the country" in a critical light. |
